বাংলাদেশ একটি নদীমাতৃক দেশ।বর্তমানে ছোট-বড় মিলিয়ে এদেশের
ভূখণ্ডের ৭০০ টি নদ-নদী রয়েছে। এগুলোর আয়তন দৈর্ঘ্যে ২২,১৫৫
কিলোমিটার। এদের মধ্যে পদ্মা নদী বাংলাদেশের অন্যতম প্রধান
নদী। এর গড় গভীরতা ২৫৯ মিটার। গড় প্রস্থ ১০ কিলোমিটার। এটি
দৈর্ঘ্যে ১২০ কিলোমিটার। এটি বাংলাদেশের দ্বিতীয় দীর্ঘ্যতম নদী।
পদ্মা নদী ভারত ও ভারতের উত্তরবঙ্গে গঙ্গা এবং বাংলাদেশে পদ্মা
নামে পরিচিত। এর উৎপত্তিস্থল হিমালয়ের গঙ্গোত্রী হিমবাহে। উত্তর
ভারতের কয়েকটি রাজ্য অতিক্রম করে গঙ্গা রাজশাহী জেলা দিয়ে
পদ্মা নামে বাংলাদেশে প্রবেশ করেছে। এটি গোয়ালন্দের নিকট
ব্রম্মপুত্রের প্রধান ধারা যমুনা সঙ্গে মিলিত হয়েছে। চাঁদপুরে এসে এ
নদী মেঘনার সাথে মিলিত হয়ে বরিশাল ও নোয়াখালী অতিক্রম করে
বঙ্গোপসাগরে পতিত হয়েছে। বাংলাদেশের অন্যতম বৃহত্তম নদী গঙ্গা-
পদ্মা বিধৌত অঞ্চলের আয়তন ৩৪,১৮৮ বর্গ কিলোমিটার। পশ্চিম
থেকে পূর্বে নিম্নগঙ্গায় অসংখ্য শাখা নদীর মধ্যে উল্লেখযোগ্য
হচ্ছে- ভাগীরথী,হুগলি,মাথাভাঙ্গা,ইছামতি,ভৈরব,কুমার,কপোতাক্ষ,
নবগঙ্গা,চিত্রা,মধুমতি,আরিয়ালখা ইত্যাদি। পদ্মা নদীকে কেন্দ্র করে
সৃষ্টি হয়েছে নানা সাহিত্য। মানিক বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় এর বিখ্যাত উপন্যাস
"পদ্মা নদীর মাঝি" এই নদীর তীরের মানুষের জীবনকে কেন্দ্র করেই
লেখা। এই নদীর রূপ দেখে কবি তালহা আজিজ বলেছেন,
"পদ্মার তীরেতে বসবাস আমার,
মুগ্ধ আমি রূপ দেখে তার।
এর তীরেই আছে কত শত স্মৃতি।
রাতে জোনাকিরা দেয় জ্যোতি;
মনে হয়, যেন স্বর্গের ছায়া!
কি অপরূপ তার মায়া! "
